History of Collins Friends Meeting
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is the oldest religious organization in southern Erie County. Soon after 1800 Quaker missionaries came to this area to work among Native Americans. In 1807, 700 acres were purchased to open a mission; this was the first land purchased in what is known as the Town of Collins. In 1809 these Quaker missionaries were the first non-Indian inhabitants of southwestern Erie County. After meeting first in a log house, and then one of framed timber, Friends erected the present building (pictured above) in 1888. Over the years Collins Friends have acted on their concern for the persecuted and oppressed. They supported an orphanage and a school for the Senecas, and they made their homes available as “stations” on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved Americans reach Canada. Today we continue the dream and vision of these pioneers: to be a living fellowship with trust in God, and to continue Christ's legacy of love and service.
